Tech Mahindra has announced the launch of Project Indus, a foundational language model designed to support various Indic languages and dialects. This initiative aims to streamline the deployment of advanced AI models for enterprises. The initial phase focuses on Hindi and its 37+ dialects.

Project Indus will be implemented using a 'GenAI in a box' framework, leveraging high-performance computing, storage, and networking solutions from Dell Technologies, and infrastructure solutions from Intel, including Intel Xeon Processors and OneAPI software. This setup will allow customers to integrate the Indus model into their GenAI applications.

In this collaboration, Tech Mahindra will utilize Intel GaudiAI Accelerators and AI training resources to develop future versions of the Indus model and enhance employee expertise on Intel's hardware and software products. This will support Tech Mahindra's goal of providing GenAI expertise to its global customer base across multiple industries.

Nikhil Malhotra, Global Head of Makers Lab at Tech Mahindra, stated that Project Indus represents a major effort to create a language model from scratch. Through their R&D division, Makers Lab, they have developed a roadmap, collected data from Hindi speakers, and built the Indus model. The collaboration with Dell and Intel aims to deliver cutting-edge AI solutions that enable enterprises to scale quickly and drive innovation.

This partnership seeks to revolutionize AI-driven solutions across various industries by leveraging Tech Mahindra's ability to develop localized, industry-agnostic LLMs with support from Dell and Intel's infrastructure. The goal is to create customized use cases for applications such as customer support and content creation, benefiting sectors like healthcare, education, banking, agriculture, and telecom.

Denise Millard, Chief Partner Officer at Dell Technologies, highlighted that the Dell AI Factory facilitates the use of AI-optimized technologies and an open ecosystem of partners, accelerating AI adoption to drive growth and innovation.

Tech Mahindra plans to initially focus the Indus model on key use cases and pilot projects, providing infrastructure and computing as a service, and offering scalable AI solutions to enterprises.

Santhosh Viswanathan, Vice President & Managing Director – India Region for Intel, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting that Project Indus will enable seamless deployment of advanced AI models across industries, enhancing operational efficiency and providing a competitive edge. This initiative aims to empower businesses to scale and innovate rapidly.
